Algerian Ex-PMs Sentenced To Prison For Corruption

 

Algeria's APS news agency reports that two former Algerian Prime Ministers have been given heavy sentences on Tuesday in what is a series of high-profile trials on corruption that was set in motion after former and longtime president of the country, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was forced to resign amidst protest by agitated citizens.

The PMs involved are:

Ahmed Ouyahia, who has served as a prime minister in Algeria four times, also serving as the Justice Minister. In the corruption case against him, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Abdelmalek Sellal has served as prime minister twice and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

It also added that Abdeslam Bouchouareb, Minister of Industry and Mines, who is currently elusive and has an international arrest warrant issued against him by the Algerian judiciary for corruption charges was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

However, his sentence was given in absentia.
