Former US President Donald Trump has been charged over his handling of classified documents after he left the White House.
The 76-year-old faces seven charges including unauthorised retention of classified files.
It is the second indictment of Trump and if convicted, it carries a maximum 10-year jail term.
This new case comes less than three months after he was charged in New York with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
In a statement on Thursday night, Trump announced that justice department lawyers had informed his legal team that he had been indicted, and added that he is due in court next week.
The former president has been charged with seven counts related to the mishandling of classified documents.
Trump who has maintained his innocence has been summoned to appear at a federal court in Miami, Florida, on Tuesday afternoon, where he will be arrested and hear the charges against him.
"I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former president of the United States.
"This is indeed a dark day for the United States of America.
"We are a country in serious and rapid decline, but together we will Make America Great Again!", he stated.
According to Al Jazeera, an indictment is the formal charge brought against someone after a grand jury – which is made up of members of the community – votes and enough members agree there is sufficient evidence to charge someone with a crime.
According to reports, the indictment won’t stop him from contesting.
Neither the indictment itself nor a conviction would prevent Trump from running for or winning the presidency in 2024.
Trump is campaigning to make a return to the White House in 2024 by contesting in the Presidential elections.
