Alumni Donate N120 Milllion Solar Power Project To Maiduguri Varsity

Alumni Donate N120 Milllion Solar Power Project To Maiduguri

The Alumni Association of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAD) has donated a N120 million 200KVA solar power project to the institution.

The Chairman of the association, Baba Shettima-Kukawa disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Shettima-Kukawa said the 10 KVA solar power for the institution's main library, which is the first phase of the project has been approved, stating that the 20 KVA for the library, which is the secong=d phase would be launched on September 7.

Speaking on the reason for the project, the Chairman said it was put together to reduce the effect of the 19-month lack of electricity in the school, providing another source of power supply.

“This has made the institution to be in dire need of an alternative source of electricity.

“Considering the rising cost of electricity supply in the country, this will further provide comfort for students.

“The project is very realistic as the cost estimate for 200 KVA is about N120 million.

“We have thousands of graduates from the University of Maiduguri and if we get 5,000 members to contribute N25,000 each we will get there,” he said.

Shettima-Kukawa stated that the association had more projects to undertake to promote the relationship between its members and improve the state of the institution.

He urged members of the Alumni body to endeavour to give back, not only to the university but also to society.

“Interest is quite low largely because we have a poor culture of giving back to the society.

“The alumni association is coming up with so many programmes to develop interaction among members and encourage participation.

“We all must collaborate and provide support to the University of Maiduguri and its students,” he added.
