Always Imbibe Spirit Of Sportsmanship, Osun INEC REC To Poli

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, has called on politicians to always imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship during the electioneering process.

Agboke made this call during a novelty football match between staff of INEC Osun and Ogun States in Osogbo on Thursday.

Agboke who noted that the football match was held to foster relationship among staff of the Commission added that the message being passed is that in every competition, a winner and looser will emerge at the end of the day.

"The football match is likened to an electioneering process.

"In sporting activities, there is spirit of sportsmanship. It means a winner should be rejoiced with and celebrated. This also goes to a looser.

"There is clear similarly between sporting activity and the electioneering process. The more the politicians imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, the better for the electioneering process in the country

"There will always be another time for a looser. This can be likened to an election too."

The Osun INEC boss called on the political class to avoid vote buying, violence and other acts inimical to the election process because of winning an election or losing same.

"When somebody has won and INEC has declared, let us allow it to go and wait for the next four years or another term as the car maybe.

"In a football match, if you win you win and if you loose, you loose. If there is a draw, there is a draw. You cannot fabricate victory

"That is the message we are passing to politicians."

He expressed hope that the novelty football match gesture would go to other South West states.

Earlier, the Ogun INEC REC, Barrister Niyi Igbalaye, revealed that this was the first time that states in INEC were meeting for a novelty match in the Commission.

"Wining is for one person at a time. If you loose today, tou can win tomorrow. We can do this without acrimony.

"In any contest there must be a winner and the winner must be magnanimous in victory and the looser must be dignified in the contest. This harmony is desirable for Nigeria."

The match, however, ended in a goalless draw.
