Amazon announced on Thursday that it is retiring Alexa.com famous for providing statistics of websites traffic and rankings of the most popular websites around the world on May 1st, 2022, just a month after it celebrates its 26th anniversary.
After Alexa Internet is shut down, the service's API will apparently be turned off by the company on December 8, 2022, according to Amazon.
Alexa was established in 1996 and was later known as the e-commerce giant's voice assistant. The service also offers paid subscriptions for those who want detailed SEO analytics and insights.
The company in its announcement said:
"Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us your go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, and so much more."
The e-commerce giant did not state the reason for shutting down the service but based on data from Semrush, Alexa Internet's traffic has been on the decline over the past decade.
current subscribers will continue to enjoy the service until May 1st, 2022 and will lose access after that date, but they'll be able to export their data from the service's various tools if they wish while new subscribers will no longer be allowed.
