Anambra Flooding: Umueri Community Submerged

Umueri community in Anambra East Local Government Area has been submerged by flood which overtaken most riverine communities in Anambra State.

It was learned that the flood which reached Umueri in the early hours of Monday took over Shell road and Udabo Umueri.

Speaking during his visit to the area, the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Benneth Emeka, regretted the damage caused by the deluge on his people causing them to harvest their crops  prematurely.

Igwe Emeka who valued the cost of lost items at millions of naira noted that Umueri people are predominantly farmers and as such have lost their means of livelihood as both farm lands with crops, rice mills, fish ponds among others were damaged and economic activities in the area put to a halt as the famous Otuocha market have been submerged causing people to trade along the road.

The Umueri Monarch who stated that he and stakeholders in the community are trying their best to evacuate and fix the affected persons and noted that it is beyond what a community can handle as many of them are homeless, now living with their relations at the upland but there are influx of people in Umueri as those from Anambra West and part of Anambra East are now taking shelter in Umueri.

Igwe Emeka thanked the state government for making an arrangement at Umueri General Hospital where the displaced persons can now stay and the Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East for his efforts to get the place ready, appealing to them to expedite action and help the community overcome the challenges.

Igwe Umueri called on the government to provide drugs for the displaced persons because there could be epidemic if nothing is done since up to ten people are now living in a room made for three persons.
