Anambra: River Niger boat mishap claims five lives, 30 rescu

Five people were killed in a boat accident in Anambra State while travelling from Kogi State along the River Niger.

According to a source in Anambra West Local Government Area's riverine area, the incident occurred on Sunday morning.

According to a video provided to newsmen by the source, the fatalities were mostly women and children.

Though the victims have not been identified, they were claimed to come from a riverine area of Kogi State and were on their way to Onitsha for various reasons.

The source said: “Early this morning, there was a boat that capsized at River Niger. Some of the victims are from parts of Kogi State and Mmiata Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area, according to the eyewitnesses.”

Meanwhile, Anambra State police have confirmed the event, stating that its agents responded to a distress call and rescued approximately 30 people.

Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, while reacting to an enquiry from journalists, said: “The situation is under control.

“Our marine operatives, on getting the distress call about the incident, responded swiftly. We were able to rescue over 30 of the passengers alive and recover the five lifeless bodies in the depths of the sea and the capsized boat.

“Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi state, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred.

“Meanwhile, the cause is yet to be ascertained, as the investigation is ongoing.”
