Angry Drivers Want FG's Assistance With Ongoing Fuel Shortage

Angry Drivers Want FG's Assistance With Ongoing Fuel Shortag

The continued fuel shortage that is being experienced in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its surroundings has drawn criticism from a number of drivers.

The motorists complained that their lives were being made difficult by the scenario, which had persisted for more than four weeks when they talked to NAN on Monday in Abuja.

Many fuelling stations were not selling the goods and the handful that were had long lines, according to a NAN Correspondent who was keeping an eye on the issue.

NAN reports that the shortage is hurting commuters badly because so many are left stranded.

With the exception of the retail outlets run by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), some gas stations modified their pump prices per litre of gasoline in response to the move, selling it for N175 instead.

The product is now sold at some fuelling stations for N195 to N250.

The NNPCL retail outlet in Zone 1 near GSM Village, the JENEP location in Azhata along Karshi Road, and the NNPCL retail outlet in Zone 4 were all noted to be selling with lengthy lines.

As Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials were spotted directing traffic, the situation generated gridlock.

The flooding of Kogi's roads and bridges, which hampered truck travel and affected the transportation of petroleum supplies, was the original cause of the scarcity.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulation Authority (NMDPRA) has yet to react to the situation, despite the fact that the shortage has persisted.

Motorists urged the Federal Government to act to resolve the ongoing gasoline shortage and alleviate the misery being experienced by locals.

A businessman who only supplied his name as Timothy claimed that he was spending a lot of money on black market vendors and that the only way he could continue to operate was by offering more products and services to the general people.

“I buy 10 litres of petrol at N3,500 from black marketers since it is not easily gotten at the fuelling stations because of long queues.

“It is unfortunate that no fuel station sells below N175. And you can’t buy in Jerry cans to power your generator if you don’t drive in with a car,’’ he said.

Tobi Emmanuel, a driver, lamented the discomfort he had been feeling for more than four weeks. He added that despite spending many productive hours at gas stations, he had seen little to no improvement.

“Today, most of the stations are not selling along my route which is Nyanyaa, so I managed to get to NNPC, Zone 4 still no hope because of the intimidating queues,” he said.

Another customer, Rose Ogbuu, voiced her discontent with the situation and added that, despite the fluctuating pump price, people would not complain if fuel was always available.

Civil servants and other travellers also bemoaned the situation, calling the lack of transit and fee increases demoralising.

They claimed that due to the shortage, commercial drivers now charged N400 for a route that cost N250.
