Another Journalist Attacked In Mexico

Another journalist has been attacked in Mexico on Wednesday.

The attack occurred a day after press groups held protests throughout Mexico.

According to Aljazeera, the attacked Journalist, Jose Ignacio Santiago said he narrowly escaped when a car carrying armed assailants tried to cut his vehicle off on a highway in the state of Oaxaca on Wednesday.

Santiago added that he was able to escape because he was accompanied by two bodyguards assigned to him under a government programme to protect journalists.

He stated that the bodyguard driving him was able to outmanoeuvre the attackers, but the assailants opened fire when they saw the journalist’s car escaping.

In Mexico, attacks on journalists has been on the rise. On January 17, Margarito, who is a crime photojournalist was gunned down outside his home.

Another reporter, Maldonado López was found shot to death in her car on January 23.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. Since 2018, 52 journalists/media workers have been killed in the country.
