Another Teen Killed In Iran, Sparks Fresh Protest

An 18-year-old is the latest teen killed in clashes in the northwest Iranian, prompting conducted renewed protest actions on Thursday in defiance of a crackdown by the authorities.

Iran has for over six weeks been gripped by protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested by the notorious morality police — a movement that poses the biggest challenge to the Islamic republic since the 1979 revolution.

Ayatollah Khamenei, the clerical leader of Iran, has responded with a crackdown that has resulted in the arrest of 1,000 people so far and, in the opinion of activists, may result in the death penalty.

Since the movement shows no signs of slowing down, the difficulties for the government are made worse by the Iranian custom of staging a "chehelom" mourning ceremony 40 days following a death, which means that every fresh murder can spark new protest actions.

Hadis Najafi, a 22-year-old woman who activists claim was killed by security agents in September, was honoured with a 40-day event on Thursday in the city of Karaj west of Tehran, according to Iran Human Rights, a group with roots in Norway.

According to IHR, police closed the highway that led to the cemetery to stop even more people from going there.

“This year is the year of blood, Seyyed Ali (Khamenei) will be toppled,” the report said.
