Ahead of the forthcoming council election in Enugu State, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has charged the State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), to conduct a credible election.
ENSIEC had fixed the February 23, 2022, for the conduct of the election.
The party gave the charge when the State Working Committee led by their Chairman, Chief Adolphus Ude paid ENSIEC chairman, Dr Mike Ajogwu a courtesy visit at the headquarters of the commission.
They asked ENSIEC to abide by the democratic principles to avoid post-election disagreements in the state.
Ude decried the fact that since 1999, successive PDP governments have turned the state into a one-party state by making sure that it wins all the 260 councillorship and 17 chairmanship positions through massive rigging and intimidation of the opposition political parties.
He called on Dr Ajogwu to make a difference this time by ensuring a level playing field for all political parties to contest.
“Since 1999 in Enugu State, credible elections have been hard to come by in the state, due to the ruling party’s penchant to rig out other political parties.
“In some situations, they won't even come with electoral materials even after boasting of being in charge.
During the visit, Dr Mike Ajogwu (SAN) stated that the coming election will be free, fair, credible and transparent.
"I am like grandfather and would like to leave a legacy. While we are working hard to organise credible elections, other political parties should not just sit down in their comfort zones, but should start a comprehensive and vigorous campaign to win.”
The ENSIEC Chairman, gave the Enugu APC leadership copies of the official gazette containing the guidelines of the forthcoming local government elections; urging them to study it and be ready ahead of time.
