Armed Robbery Suspects Escape From Prison In Calabar

Nineteen suspected armed robbers and kidnappers have reportedly escaped from police custody at the Cross River Police Command headquarters in Calabar.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident to Journalist. 

The escape according to a police source took place on Sunday night when the robbers used a hacksaw to cut the iron key to the cell where they are detained and escape.

According to a police source who pleaded anonymity said, “As I speak to you, the station guard and some other officers are being detained. This could not have happened with the SARS. Our lives are in danger.”

He said none of the escapees has been re-arrested as of midmorning today but the authorities have dispatched crack teams across the city to track the runaway robbers

The State PPRO, however, said “The information is not true. Only three robbers attempted to escape but were arrested and returned to the cell.

“The girlfriend of one of the suspects procured the saw which was used to cut the lock before they escaped.”
