Army, Youths Clash In Imo, Leave Scores Dead

Several people were feared dead when youths clashed with soldiers from the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze at Izombe in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

The event occurred on Monday after soldiers were sent to the oil-rich region to reduce violence and illegal activity there, The Nation Online

However, military officials revealed that the attack was carried out by community youths.

The military in the region enhanced patrol when it was discovered that the youths had attacked and killed a truck driver two days earlier.

The patrol team was allegedly attacked by the youths, which resulted in the shooting and escalations between the soldiers and the youths.

Shootings were reportedly still occurring in the neighbourhood at the time the report was filed.

The incident was corroborated by a resident, who called it an "invasion."

Captain Joseph Akubo, a spokesperson for the 34 Artillery Brigade in Obinze, who confirmed the incident, refuted claims that soldiers broke into the neighbourhood.

According to him, the youths attacked the troops who were out on a routine patrol as a result of an upsurge in criminal activity in the area.

As the youths and soldiers were still engaged in a fierce battle, Akubo said he had not yet estimated the number of casualties.

According to him: “The soldiers were on routine patrol in the area when they came under attack by the youths. Two days ago, a Dangote Truck driver was killed and coupled with other criminal activities, which had necessitated increased patrol. So as the soldiers were on normal exercise, they came under attack.

“I cannot tell you the casualty figure because the youth are still attacking our men and taking cover in the buildings in the neighbourhood.”
