Assembled In Nigeria Vehicles? Here Are The Companies Behind

Nigeria is one of the African countries that have various automobile assembling and production companies even though they are just very few of these indigenous cars used in Nigeria. These Companies locally produce and assemble cars that can be bought brand new at duty-free costs in Nigeria and for Nigerians.

A major number of the cars you see on Nigerian roads are always imported and 70% of the car's worth is always paid as the duty to the customs agency which is a very big problem for car buyers.

These extra charges added by car dealers make the price of cars more expensive than you would buy it if they were assembled or/ and produced in Nigeria.

The 2014 automobile policy in Nigeria stated clearly that registered automobile dealerships in Nigeria should involve themselves with local production and assembling of cars so that cars could be cheaper and more assessable for Nigeria buyers.

These companies are:

Innoson Motors

Innoson Motors

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (IVM) was the first-ever fully Nigerian company that went into the production of automobiles and they have had success doing it here in Nigeria.

Innoson is owned by a Nigerian business tycoon Chukwuma Innocent and has its plant in Nnewi area of Anambra state. The company manufactures and sells its cars throughout Africa. The automaker recently launched a new ride-hailing service to improve the lives of Nigerians.

Its latest model is the Innoson Caris which is a door premium-looking sedan in addition to the already existing Innoson Umu, Fox, Ikenga, G40 and G80.

Nord

Nord Automobiles is a Nigerian automaker with its headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. Nord Automobiles was conceived out of the need for a made-in-Nigeria car brand. Its activities centre on conveying quality aptitude in the worth chain – which incorporates the plan, sourcing, improvement, amassing, dispersion, showcasing, arrangement of deals, and after-deals administration of our extraordinary Nigerian marked cars.

The CEO Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi is a young Nigerian that just has the vision to make sure that Nigeria gets on the world map of automobile makers.

The Nord Tank is the most popular automobile from Nord. It is a pickup truck that was beautifully designed to suit the Nigerian driving condition.

Other cars by Nord include the Nord Flit, Nord Max, Nord A3, Nord A5, ranging from sedans to full-size commuter buses.  

LSM

Lanre Shittu Motors which made Mack and JAC trucks household names in Nigeria started its JAC Truck assembly plant in 2018 as a way to make heavy-duty trucks cheaper for Nigerian users. The car assembling company has brought its experience in the production of trucks to bear in the assembling of the new one-tonne truck which will compete in the same segment with Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200 and Ford Ranger.

It was gathered that the assembling company has the capacity to manufacture 6 units of trucks in one shift or 12 in two shifts depending on the market demand and can produce about 150 vehicles monthly.

Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN)

PAN Nigeria Limited, which started as a joint venture between the Federal Government and AP France, was incorporated on December 15, 1972, and the Kaduna-based plant was commissioned on March 11, 1975. In November 2006, PAN was privatized and ASD Motors, the core investor took over management of the company in January 2007 with the hope of turning around the fortunes of the company. With continued poor performance and high indebtedness to banks, in October 2012, the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) acquired the debts of the company and converted a portion to equity.

The company was one of the first and a true Nigerian automobile manufacturing companies located at Kaduna to start full local production of cars in Nigeria back in the 1980s. The company has been delivering impressive car models like Peugeot 301 which is best in safety, storage, and overall features. Peugeot 301 is an entry-level model manufactured in 2015. The overall design of Peugeot 301, from the signature grille to the headlamps to the tail light, is better than any other typical car look.

Peugeot 301 has a generation timeline where the specs and features vary from one another. The recent 2017 Peugeot 301 has a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces a power of 115 Horsepower.

A Punch report says NESBITT Investment Nigeria Limited has acquired Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) and plans to inject US$150m into the company in the next three years to revamp the automobile firm. According to the new owners, the fund to be invested would be spent on retooling and upgrading the automobile company's assembly line as well as in supporting infrastructure and working capital.

Globe Motors

Hyundai began assembling cars in Nigeria under Global Motors which is the biggest distributor of Hyundai cars in Nigeria.

In 2020, Hyundai rolled out its first locally assembled cars like the Hyundai i10 Grand, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Elantra and the Hyundai ix35. A brand that has proved over the years to be reliable, highly functional and affordable than their major Japanese competitors.

Coscharis Motors

The Ford F-150 truck was the first car to be produced in this facility and it was a success.

Nigerian automotive industry in Nigeria, Coscharis Motors Assembly Ltd (CMAL) established in 2014, commenced assembling of Ford Rangers (pickup truck) with its first units rolled out in November 2015. This development makes Nigeria the only location outside of South Africa where Ford assembles cars in Africa.

Coscharis Motors Assembly Ltd is a subsidiary of Coscharis Motors with the status of assembler of Ford vehicles for the Nigerian market.

Ford Motor Company reinforced its partnership by availing Coscharis to fully fitted equipment and technical support for the Semi Knocked Down (SKD) plant as well as training a sizeable number of our local personnel to handle the assembly plant, with the intention of taking control within the shortest feasible time.

Presently the CMAL plant is located in a SKD facility in PWD in Ikeja however, its registered office and main plant for the SKD and CKD is located at Km 32 Lekki Epe Express Way Awoyaya, Lagos State. The main plant at the Corporate Head Office is sited on a piece of land in excess of 14 hectares with plans of being launched in 2016.

Coscharis is the biggest distributor of BMW, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Ford cars in Nigeria completed its assembly plant for Ford vehicles in 2018 with plans to produce between 10,000 to 20,000 cars there every year.

Stallion Motors

Stallion Group Automobile assembled the First made in Nigeria electric car, launched on November 13, 2020, by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at VON Automobiles in Ojo, Lagos State.

KONA Electric is a product of the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai and the first made in Nigeria electric car, KONA was launched at the Made in Nigeria exhibition event in Eagle Square, Abuja.

Nissan started its local production of cars in 2014 starting with the Nissan Patrol SUV. This made the prices of brand new Nissan cars drop and that is why you see a lot of Nissan Almeras being used as official vehicles for a lot of private companies and government institutions.

The Nissan Almera and the Nissan NP300 are two vehicles that have been consistently locally produced here in Lagos.

Nissan was the first automaker to move in alignment with Nigeria's new automobile policy because Stallion Motors know that the demand for brand-new cars in Nigeria grows every year and it will only be profitable to the country and the company.

Although most of these vehicles were made in Nigeria, a lot of them were basically assembled in auto plants in Nigeria, with the exception of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company.

Type of vehicles produced: Truck and buses/ FAW

National Trucks Manufacturers. Location of the assembly plant: Kano

Type of vehicles produced: Pick-ups, trucks, buses, SUVs, agricultural tractors, etc. Sino trucks.

Proforce Ltd. Location of the assembly plant: Ode-Remo, Ogun State.

Type of vehicles produced: Armoured vans and buses/ Proforce

Scoa Nigeria Plc. Location of the assembly plant: Isolo, Oshodi

Type of vehicles produced: Trucks and buses/MAN

Steyr Nigeria Ltd. Location of the assembly plant: Industrial Estate, P.M.B 0135, Bauchi.

Type of vehicles produced: Trucks, buses, motorcycles
