ASSU Strike: Students React As ASUU Calls Off Strike

Some Nigerian Students have taken to their social media handles to react as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced they have called off the nine-month strike embarked on since March, 2020.

AllNews understands that the union has been on a protracted industrial action over the backlog of unmet agreements between its members and the federal government.

The National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi who made the announcement of the students' resumption during a briefing of the union in Abuja said the suspension of the strike takes effect from Thursday, December 24th, 2020.

Ogunyemi added that the development followed the agreement reached with the Federal Government and a meeting with its National Executive Council (NEC).

This online news platform reports that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that the prolonged strike by the varsity lecturers would be called off before January 15.

In a related vein, the union president also said the lecturers sympathized with students who were also their children, adding that “no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the matter resolved as long as the government is consistent with its commitments.”

While warning that the union would return to strike without notice if the government fails in meeting its part of the agreement reached with the university lecturers, Ogunyemi noted that the reopening of the schools, considering the COVID-19 pandemic, lies with the Federal Government and senate of the universities.

However, the announcement has steered a lot of comments on social media, as students take to their Twitter handles differently to express their feelings as the board calls off the strike.

ASUU just spent the past 9 months negotiating mostly better work deals for its members. I hope these lecturers return to the classrooms as better behaved people: attend lectures, deliver better teaching, stop harassment of students and end the pilfering called ‘buy my handouts’.

ASUU has conditionally suspended the strike until 3rd of March, 2021 as to prevent another #EndSARS protest. We are not dense not to see that Federal government are doing everything possible to prevent another protest, of all the time, why now the time to suspend the strike? Why?
