ASUU Excos Meet Over Half Salary Payment

ASUU Excos Meet Over Half Salary Payment

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to meet today to make a decision on the half salaries paid to members by the federal government.

The convergence will take place at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja and leaders of the union disclosed that lecturers would decide whether or not to resume the strike.

Meanwhile, branches across the nation have held a congress to make a decision on the next steps to take, with the University of Jos resolving that lecturers would stay at home pending the payment of withheld salaries by the government.

A member of NEC who pleaded anonymity shared: "Officially, the national body did not tell branches to hold congress but many of them started calling meetings following the receipt of the amputated salary by the government.

"We don’t have to go on strike; there are lots of options available.”

Responding to a question about the options available, the source said: "We can decide to stay at home, we can decide to seize results, or we can decide to cancel the session since the government won’t pay the withheld salary and we can’t work for months that we weren’t paid for.”
