Following the protest by lecturers over the half-salary payment by the Federal Government, the latter has insisted that lecturers will not be paid without working in line with the ‘No work no pay’ policy.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu while speaking to State House reporters after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
ASUU called off its eight-month strike in October after the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Members of the union were however paid half salaries at the end of October, a development which led to its protest and lecture-free day.
Responding to the reporters on Wednesday, Adamu reiterated the federal government's position that the lecturers “would not be paid for work not done.”
Also reacting to the allegation made by the President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodoke, that the federal government's payment to the lecturers on a pro-rata basis was a tactic to make them casual workers, the minister said "nobody can make University lecturers casual workers.”
Adamu also denied being aware of the lecturers' threatened one-day action against the government’s move.
