ASUU, GSU Disagree Over Resumption of Academic Activities

ASUU, GSU Disagree Over Resumption of Academic Activities

The Gombe State University (GSU) Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the university management have disagreed over the decision to resume academic activities today.

Recall that the management of the institution had asked its 100 level students to resume today in a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar (Academics), Musa Sarki.

According to the statement, the students were to resume and complete their first semester 2021/2022 academic session.

Meanwhile the institution's branch chairman of the ASUU, Dr Suleiman Salihu Jauro and the Secretary Mohammed Garba Ndogu stated that their members will continue with the strike action embarked by the national body.

According to the union, the university's Senate has not approved a calendar for the commencement of the classes which is supported by the GSU bye-laws.

According to the statement: “And this (approval of the calendar) has not happened in the university as of today.”

The union added that: “Lecturers under the auspices of ASUU GSU chapter will not partake in any academic activities until the current national roll-over strike action is vacated."

However all efforts made to reach the institution's spokesperson, Mohammed Sammani Abubakar proved abortive.

Meanwhile AllNews was at the institution and observed that some students had tutorial classes while an English general studies class held with the lecturer available.

Daily Trust also reports that a top official of the institution has revealed that the management remains firm on its decision to resume activities.
