The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Chapter, Dr. Dele Ashiru has requested the revitalisation of public universities across the country.

Ashiru made this call in a meeting which took place in Lagos where he spoke on “Putting an end to the perennial ASUU strike: The Role of the Academia, Government, Parents and Students”.

AllNews reports that ASUU has been on strike for about three months with the demands of the union yet to be met by the federal government.

While speaking, the Chairman summoned the support of students, parents, and other stakeholders to facil;itate the revitalisation, stating that the effort of the union alone was not enough to make the government interfere in matters concerning education.

Ashiru encouraged the government to fulfil the 2009 agreement signed with ASUU, expressing his regret at the criticism meted on the union by the public.

“Nigerian Universities rather than being citadels of learning became citadels of violence, corruption, neglect, and mal-administration and the system brewed various crimes.

“It was the ASUU agitation as a trade union of intellectuals that led to the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and 2012 ASUU ‘Needs Assessment of Nigeria Universities’.

"Parents must support ASUU in the agitation for restructuring the educational system"
