ASUU Probes FG’s N65bn Offer, Unilorin, Others Accept Offer

ASUU Probes FG’s N65bn Offer, Unilorin, Others Accept Offe

FG's offer to universities is under scrutiny by zonal chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU embarked on a nationwide industrial action on March 23, 2020, following its dispute with the Federal Government over its insistence on the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for the payment of University lecturers’ salaries and allowances, as against ASUU’s proposed payment solution University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) which ASUU believes guarantees the autonomy of universities in Nigeria as enshrined in its constitution.

Following several earlier meetings that were unproductive, the government eventually softened its grip by agreeing to pay a total of N65bn which covers salaries and arrears from June till date as well as earned academic allowance and revitalisation fund for universities represented by ASUU.

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige also hinted, days after the agreement, at the terms of ASUU that the strike would soon be suspended, saying that he sees no reason why ASUU would not accept the offer it made to them.

However, the offer made by the FG to the universities is under scrutiny by zonal chapters of ASUU; some of which have accepted the offer, some are still deliberating, while some universities have outrightly rejected it.
