The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has explained the reason for prolonging the commencement of lectures at the institution after the suspension of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

In a communique by the Student's Representative Council of ABU signed by its President, Jubril Idris Kuwaje and made available on Monday, the management gave more reasons for the extended calendar.

In a bulletin released last Thursday, the university announced October 24 as the resumption date for academic activities but noted that lectures for undergraduate students would not commence until January 3, 2023.

Although the management gave the reasons for the decision to include the completion of students’ registration, consideration of outstanding results by the Standing Committee, Post Graduate examination seminar and external examinations, and Christmas and New Year breaks, the students still expressed displeasure over the extended calendar.

According to the statement published after a meeting with the university management, student halls and lecture rooms, especially those in Samaru and Shika Campuses have been threatened by dangerous reptiles, therefore, the institution is considering general fumigation for the safety of its staff and students.

It added that the university was running low on funds and that commencing academic activities in that state was difficult.

ABU's Vice-Chancellor was also quoted to have reiterated the need for admission to be offered to both jambites and direct entry candidates before the commencement of academic activities.
