The National Parent-Teacher Association (NAPTAN) has dissociated itself from the statement that said each of its members will contribute 10,000 naira to support the Federal Government in meeting the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The association was said to have made a proposal to pay 10,000 naira each to universities in a bid to put an end to the six months strike on Tuesday.
The National President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke had rejected the offer while speaking on Arise Television on Thursday, urging the parents to pressure the government to meet the union's demands rather.
NAPTAN in a statement by its National President, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma debunked the statement, distancing the association from the proposal.
Danjuma said NAPTAN was unaware of the statement, warning individuals and groups from confusing the public with its name.
He noted that the position of the association has been for the federal government and ASUU to come to an agreement and not to contribute money to pay the union.
“We are not involved in any statement related to paying money to ASUU for them to call off the ongoing strike.”
“Our stand since the inception of the strike is for both the ASUU and the federal government to come to an agreement, which is to end the strike but not to contribute money to pay ASUU,” he said.
The President also pleaded with the government to rescue secondary school students and other Nigerians in the captivity of bandits.
He lamented the situation of the kidnapped female students in Yawuri who have been in captivity for over 400 days.
