ASUU Strike: Students, Security Storm UNILAG Gate As Protest Looms

ASUU Strike: Students, Security Storm UNILAG Gate As Protest

Officials of the Nigeria Police Force and other security officials have stormed the main gate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as a group of students plan to protest due to the persisting Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) industrial action.

Punch reports that the countrywide protest was earlier announced by student groups on Tuesday, with locations of the protest being UNILAG main gate, University of Ibadan main gate, and places in Edo State, all indicated in fliers.

In the early hours of this Tuesday, security men filled the UNILAG main gate while pictures of students at the main gate of UI under the auspices of  'Fund Education Coalition' were also seen.

The students were sighted with their banners which read “We say no to commercialisation of education”, “Every one of us must rise to defend education”, and “We stand with ASUU revitalisation demand”.

University lecturers have refused to work since ASUU embarked on strike about four months ago. The union claims that the Federal Government was yet to meet the demands in the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.

The agreement included the change of the payment platform for lecturers and the payment of earned allowance among others.
