ASUU Strike: SUG President Reacts As UI Students Protest

ASUU Strike: SUG President Reacts As UI Students Protest

Some students of the University of Ibadan (UI), assembled at the UI Gate on Friday to protest the prolonged Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

NAN reports that the protest was led by 200 level Solomon Emiola, who said the protest was necessary as students were tired of staying at home.

He added that the protest would be staged daily until the government meets students' demands.

“Our leaders have continued to politic with our future.

“Our goal is to shut down the whole of  Ibadan, until our demand is met,” Emiola said.

Daniel Eyilabo pleaded that schools be reopened, noting that out-of-school students were doing well.

“If we say that school is a scam, we will not be wrong because our lives are on hold and those who even graduated do not even have jobs.

“We have to stand up for our rights,” he said.

A former Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman,  Emelieze Andrew said the protest was staged to awaken the spirit of students who are being cheated due to the carelessness and failure of the government.

The protesters held placards with inscriptions such as ‘Closing school is a treason’, ‘Education over Election’, ‘Road Closed  end ASUU now’, among others.

The Student Union Group (SUG) leader of UI, Yinka Adewole, however interrupted the protest, stopping the protesters from locking the school gate while maintaining that he wasn't informed about it.

He stated that most of the protesters are not students of the university, noting that members of the Student Union had fixed may 17 to show their discontent at the strike.

The protesters reportedly stopped commuters along UI and Ojoo road, with security agencies present to ensure law and order were upheld.
