ASUU: Union To Hold Emergency Congress Over Withheld Salaries

ASUU: Union To Hold Emergency Congress Over Withheld Salarie

Chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to hold emergency congresses starting on Wednesday (today).

According to The Punch, the reason for the congress is to discuss the government's decision to pay the withheld salaries of members of the recently registered union, Congress of University Academics (CONUA) while withholding ASUU's.

The decision each branch arrives at is expected to be conveyed to the national leadership of the union.

A source who spoke to The Punch said the union decided not to involve the press in the congress because it is being tactical about the "war".

“Branches are expected to hold congress. Ours is tomorrow.

"We have refused to say anything to the press because this is a war we want to be tactical about,” he said.

A member of the Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka also said, “Yes, it is true. We will be holding our congress in line with the directive of the national body.”

CONUA and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) became officially gazetted yesterday when they were presented with a certificate of registration by Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment.
