ASUU: Why Strike Is Now Indefinite — Osodeke

ASUU: Why Strike Is Now Indefinite — Osodeke

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed the reason for its decision to extend its ongoing industrial action indefinitely.

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the National President of the union said he noticed the pretentious attitude of the government towards the union in the past five and half years,

He noted that the government had only been meeting with the union without any expression of faithfulness.

“In view of the foregoing, and following extensive deliberations on government’s response to the resolution of 14th February 2022, so far, NEC concluded that the demands of the union had not been satisfactorily addressed.

“Consequently, NEC resolved to transmute the roll-over strike to a comprehensive, total, and indefinite strike action beginning from 12.01 am Monday 29th August 2022,” the statement read in part.

Osodeke however stated that the union was open to negotiations as always.

“NEC acknowledges with appreciation past and current efforts by eminent Nigerians and groups to mediate in the lingering crisis. Our union remains open to reasonable engagements as we have always done,” it added.

ASUU commenced its ongoing strike on February 14, 2022. The union after its NEC meeting on Monday extended the industrial action indefinitely.
