Atalanta were better than Leverkusen in Europa final - 'Prou

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso had mixed emotions following his team's hearbreaking 3-0 defeat to Italian side, Atalanta in the final of the Europa League Wednesday night at the Aviva stadium in Dublin.

German champions Leverkusen had remained unbeaten in all competitions heading into the Europa final and were on course for a 52nd win across all competitions this season.

However Nigerian international Ademola Lookman did not read the script as he scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 drubbing to end that run.

Alonso was on hnd to respond to the media in the aftermath of the loss to the Italians.

"Atalanta were better than us and they deserve the trophy," the former Liverpool midfielder said.

"It wasn't our day. We've had a bad night. It hurts that it happened in such an important match."

He added: "The normality is not to suffer a first defeat in the 52nd game. It's exceptional what we achieved and we should be proud. But it's painful."

The defeat was the first for the German champions since May 27 last year.
