Atiku Calls For Urgent Action To Tackle Diabetes

As Nigerians join the rest of the world to observe World Diabetes Day (WDD), the People's Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has called for greater attention to the management of the disease.

This is part of his message through a statement signed by his Special Assistant on broadcast media, AbdulRasheed Shehu on Monday in Kano.

According to him, the fact that over 10 million Nigerians are living with the disease and that the numbers are expected to double by 2030 calls for urgent action.

"Considering that there are only 150 endocrinologists in our country, with a fast-growing population of more than 220 million to manage the condition, Atiku expressed concern, knowing that diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb amputation," part of the statement reads.

The former Vice President expressed worry over shortage of specialists and diabetologists who investigate, diagnose and treat disorders of the endocrine system in Nigeria.

"We need to increase the available number of medical personnel to investigate and manage the disease and public awareness of its scourge," the statement adds.
