Andy Murray was at his very best as he fought off a fightback from Matteo Berrettini to win his opening-round clash at the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Murray completed a 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (10-6) win on Rod Laver Arena over the 13th seed.
The win which left the Scot stunned was his first victory over a top-20 opponent at a Grand Slam since 2017.
Murray was right on game from the start following a sluggish opening from the 2021 Wimbledon finalist Berrettini.
The 36-year-old won the opening two sets before Italy's Berrettini fought back, hammering down aces and cranking his big forehand into gear to level in a dramatic fourth-set tie-break.
However, Murray who thought hip surgery in 2019 would end his career got his moment of fortune and saved a match point at 5-4 in the decider.
"I will be feeling it this evening and tomorrow but right now I'm unbelievably happy and proud of myself," said Murray, a five-time runner-up in Melbourne.
"I've put a lot of work into the last three months with my team, to give me the opportunity to perform in stadiums like this and matches like this and it paid off tonight.
"That's the first time I've ever played one of those 10-point tie-breakers and it's a bit different.
"He came back really strong and I was a bit lucky at the end with the net cord.
"He was serving unbelievably and he's a brilliant competitor as well, he always fights right to the end. I did well to get through."
