Australian Open: People's Expectations Don't Matter - Swiatek

Australian Open: People's Expectations Don't Matter - Swiate

World number one Iga Swiatek has said that she is not bothered about people's expectations of her ahead of the 2023 Australian Open.

Swiatek reiterated that her major goal is to add the Australian Open title to her previous achievements, adding that she has no intention of matching her impressive 2022 season.

In a discussion with BBC Sport in Melbourne, the Polish tennis star said, "When I don't care about what people think and what their expectations of me are, it's easier for me to succeed."

"That was what I tried my best to do in 2022.

"Although I'm proud of them, I'm not going to try to match my previous achievements because it would not be constructive.

"A season like that is something amazing and rare. Sure, I would love to do it again but it's not advantageous to live in the past."

Last season, Swiatek attained the status of world number one following her on-court stunning performances.

She ended the year claiming the French Open and US Open Grand Slam titles.

In Melbourne, she progressed to the semi-finals but was beaten 6-4,6-1 by American Danielle Collins.

Swiatek then emerged as the leading force on the WTA tour, upon the retirement of then-world number one Ashleigh Barty, who retired after winning the 2022 Australian Open title.

The run of the 21-year-old on tour was impressive as she recorded numerous accomplishments in a 37-match winning streak - which ended at Wimbledon.
