Aviation workers placards during protest in Abuja
Aviation workers on Monday embarked on a protest in Abuja, to demand the removal of the Essential Services clauses from the Bills and Acts of Aviation Agencies.
The protest is convened under the National Union of Air Transport Employees, which includes the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; Association of Nigerian Association Professionals; Amalgamated Unions of Public Corporations; Civil Service Technical & Recreational Services Employees, and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers.
The unions in the aviation sector had directed their members to “embark on peaceful rallies/public demonstrations at all airports in Nigeria.
At the Abuja protest, the workers held banners and placards, with various inscriptions, some of which read, “Buhari, don’t assent to anti-union aviation bills/acts,” Our voice must be heard,” among others.
Recall that on Sunday the union released a joint statement signed by Ochema Aba (NUATE), Francis Akinjole (ATSSSAN), Abdul Razaq Saidu (ANAP), Sikiru Waheed (AUPCTRE), and Umoh Ofonime (NAAPE) directing all members to go on the strike action.
