The governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has condoled the death of one of his predecessors, Balarabe Musa, AllNews reports.
Musa, who was Governor of Kaduna State during the Nigerian Second Republic, holding office from October 1979 until he was impeached on 23 June 1981, passed away at the early hours of Wednesday due to illness. He was 84.
"Malam Nasir El Rufai said that Alh. Musa will be remembered as a progressive politician who tried to expand the horizons of opportunity for ordinary people," the Kaduna State government said in a statement seen by AllNews.
"Alh. Balarabe Musa made notable contributions to industrializing the state.
"As a leader, he demonstrated at the ballot box, the capacity of a political party devoted to the protection of the interest of ordinary people to acquire power democratically.
"As a private citizen, he projected the qualities of principled politics, decency, integrity, consistency, and commitment to improving the lives of our ‘talakawa’ in Kaduna State and Nigeria.
"Despite the setback of his unwarranted impeachment from the office of Governor, Alh. Balarabe Musa remained steadfast to his principles and spoke his mind often, helping to project a radical voice in public discourse in defense of democracy, and to advance social justice."
Musa is expected to be buried later today (Wednesday) according to Islamic rite.
Musa was an accounts clerk (1953–1955) and a school teacher (1955–1960).
He held various managerial positions related to accountancy in the period 1960 to 1976, while studying at different colleges in London to gain additional qualifications.
Musa was elected governor of Kaduna State in 1979 on the platform of the People's Redemption Party (PRP), a party founded by Mallam Aminu Kano. with others such as Abubakar Rimi, Sabo Bakin Zuwo, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, Michael Imoudu, Chinua Achebe, Yusufu Bala Usman, Uche Chukwumerije, and Sule Lamido, the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) challenged his election unsuccessfully.
As Governor he was stalemated by the Kaduna state house of assembly, which was dominated by NPN members.
He was unable to form a cabinet since he refused to nominate NPN members and the House refused to ratify his candidates.
Eventually, the House impeached him in June 1981, making him the first Nigerian state governor ever to be impeached.
