Banditry: Zamfara Community Free From Intimidation After N20 Million Levy Payment

Banditry: Zamfara Community Free From Intimidation After N20

Bandits

The Gidan-goga community in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State has regained freedom from bandits' intimidation after the payment of N20 million levy.

Residents of the community had been intimidated by bandits for their inability to pay the 'protection levy' imposed on them by the most wanted bandits' kingpin, Bello Turji.

Turji had threatened the community to pay the money before Sunday, November 27, 2022, or face his wrath.

He threatened to attack the community until the money was paid before the deadline.

Sources revealed that the money was paid on Sunday by the community to avoid a face-off with the bandits' kingpin.

Meanwhile, a source who spoke on anonymity told The Punch that residents who had fled the community have started returning.

“Many people including myself have returned to the village because of the payment of the levy," the source said.

Turji had held five people captive when they paid the first part of the money gathered by the community.

However, an additional N6 million was paid to secure their freedom from captivity.

The source stated that: “We paid an additional sum of N6 million for the release of five people abducted by the terrorists who belonged to Bello Turji’s camp.”

Meanwhile, the Zamfara State police command is yet to release a statement on the issue.
