Barcelona: European Title Drought Continues, Hope Lingers Still

Barcelona: European Title Drought Continues, Hope Lingers St

Barcelona

Another tough pill to swallow lands on the tongue of all Barcelona fans everywhere as they watch their team bow out of European competition on Thursday although with their heads high.

Barcelona lost on aggregate 4-3 to Manchester United for the first time since the 2008 UEFA Champions League semifinals.

Despite heavy summer investment and a strong domestic form, the Catalan giants were unable to progress to the next stage of the competition, marking another disappointing result for the team in recent years.

While they won the Champions League in 2015, their subsequent performances have been lacklustre, leaving fans hoping for more.

Xavi Hernandez's side were hoping to make amends in the Europa League but after their early elimination from the Champions League, they knew the stakes were high.

Although Robert Lewandowski put Barcelona ahead with a penalty, Fred and substitute Antony netted the winner for Manchester United.

While injuries and refereeing decisions contributed to the losses both in the Champions League and Europa League, Xavi knows too well that no excuses could be made this time.

Defender Jules Kounde believes that the team is still growing and improving, and will continue to compete at the highest level.

Barcelona's European woes continue as they were knocked out of the Europa League play-off round by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday.

This defeat comes after their early elimination from the Champions League, leaving them with no chance of winning a European trophy this season.

Although winning the Spanish Super Cup in January was a morale boost, it was not enough to satisfy their appetite for more silverware.

Their defeat by Manchester United was not as humiliating as previous losses to Roma, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich, but it still stings for a Barcelona team hoping for far more.

Financial Crisis Continues

Barcelona's financial crisis continues despite their heavy summer investment.

President Joan Laporta and his board were gambling that success would be immediate to make the risk of selling off future television rights worthwhile.

While they have improved in the domestic league, their pain continues in European football.

They have conceded 16 goals in eight games, between the Champions League and Europa League.

Xavi has stated several times that he needs to win trophies this season to stay in charge.

After the club bought Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Lewandowski last summer, Xavi activated various financial "levers" to get the deals through.

The investment paid dividends as Barca have only conceded 7 goals in La Liga and leading the race for the first Spanish League title in 4 years.

Barcelona's financial crisis remains, and the risk of failure remains high.

The team's next big game is against their bitter rivals, Madrid, in the Copa del Rey semifinal first leg next Thursday.

Barcelona must pick themselves up off the canvas after yet another European knock-out blow and focus on the competitions that are left.
