Barcelona Re-Sign Oriol Romeu On Three-Year Deal

Barcelona have again signed former Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu from Girona on a three-year contract.

The 31-year-old, who is a graduate of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, played just twice for the senior side in 2010-11 before Chelsea signed him in the summer of 2011 for £4.35 million.

Barcelona did not disclose the fee for Romeu, who spent last season with Girona but inserted a buyout clause of 400 million euros ($449.12 million) in his contract.

The reigning La Liga champions stated in a statement: “Barcelona and Girona FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Oriol Romeu."

Manager Xavi Hernandez added: "Romeu has great experience and knows the club from his previous spell as a blaugrana and the style of play Xavi wants to impress on his team.

"The midfielder has shown what he can do in LaLiga and will look to perform right from the off."

Romeu is Barcelona's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of free agents Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez.

He is fancied to replace club legend Sergio Busquets in midfield, having helped Girona to finish in 10th position in the season just gone.

The Spanish midfielder did endure a difficult period at Chelsea, which led to loan spells with Valencia and Stuttgart.

He later switched permanently to Southampton in 2015 for £5 million and played 256 games on the south coast before he signed a three-year contract with Girona.
