Bauchi Police Launch Crackdown On Prohibited Firearms

The Bauchi State Police Command has launched a crackdown operation on persons in possession of prohibited firearms in the state.

The command directed the identification of quasi-security outfits or persons in possession of the prohibited firearms, arrest, investigate and prosecute those wanting in the proliferation of the prohibited firearms.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, gave the directive on Tuesday in Bauchi.

The commissioner's directive was a sequel to the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun with regard to the proliferation of prohibited firearms in the country.

The Commissioner, CP Mohammed ordered "all strategic managers consisting of Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Heads of Tactical/Operational unit of the Command to clampdown on all quasi-security outfits and private security bodies to identify, disarm, arrest, Investigate and Prosecute any individual or groups found wanting in Possession of Firearms Prohibited by Law."

The command's spokesperson, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

Wakil said: "The CP further directed all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to organise an enlightenment meeting for members of the Vigilante groups, forest guards, Hunters and all other Local Quasi- Security outfits within their areas of responsibility with immediate effect and to be notified of the IGP's directives and work within the ambit of the laws guiding their establishment, operations and as well as the nation and any contravention will attract severe sanctions.

"Also, Area Commanders are to coordinate, supervise and report the outcome of the meetings to the CP forthwith."

The command also announced the proscription of detention facilities controlled by the quasi-security outfits.

"It is also very categorical on this note that all local Quasi- security outfits who operate offices where they arrest and detain persons are hereby proscribed and declared illegal and anyone found flouting this order will face the full wrath of the Law.

"The CP MM Auwal psc wishes to inform all person(s) or group(s) unlawfully bearing prohibited firearms to with immediate effect, submit same to the nearest Police Station for onward handing over to the State Armoury, anyone found flaunting this directive will be arrested, Investigated and formally charged under the relevant provision of the firearms Act," Wakil added.
