Bayern not winning Champions League title means failure this season — Kane

Bayern not winning Champions League title means failure this

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has warned his team that not winning the UEFA Champions League will mean a failure as they get prepared to host Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

The tie at the Emirates stadium in the first leg of their quarterfinals ties in the Champions League ended in a 2-2 draw with the game in Munich carrying a degree of huge importance after Bayern lost the Bundesliga title while Arsenal lost 0-2 to Aston Villa and falter in their Premier League ambitions.

Kane left Tottenham Hotspur where he tormented his boyhood club, Arsenal in several north London derbies to sign for the Bavarians as he seeks an elusive trophy since 2008 when Spurs last won a title - the Carabao Cup.

Kane was on pre-match press conference duty for his team on Tuesday afternoon and insists that they must win the Champions League to realistically say that the season was great.

"We still have an opportunity to turn this season into a great season if we win the Champions League," Kane said ruefully as Bayern's run of 11 successive Bundesliga titles was ended by Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.

"Of course, from the club's point of view, it will be a failed season if we don't win anything this year because we're expected to win, but all we can do is take that into next year and try and turn that around."

Kane tried to play down the significance of taking on former Premier League rival Arsenal.

"I had a lot of history with Arsenal, playing for Spurs, for so many years in that north London derby, obviously it was the biggest game of the season every year probably, but it's a different chapter," added Kane.

"Maybe it was in the back of my mind, being released from a young age, there was always a point to prove, and I feel like I'm the type of player who throughout my whole career has had points to prove. I don't think that ever leaves you."

Kane has scored 39 club goals in all competitions this season.
