Bayern vs PSG: A Race For Continental Treble

Bayern Munich takes on Paris Saint Germain on Sunday night for the most coveted trophy on club history, the UEFA Champions League glory but both teams are also in a race to win the treble. There is only one team who has won the treble twice; UEFA Champions League, the national league cup, and a league cup, Barcelona during the 2014/15 and 2009/2010 seasons.

What is a continental treble?

This a feat by completed elite European clubs when a club wins at least major two cups in its country league and 1 European trophy either UEFA Champions League or Europa League. Since the Europa League is usually viewed as a lesser cup to Champions League, then most elite clubs count the Champions League over the Europa League.

Bayern Munich has won the treble before during the 2013-14 season. Paris St Germain has not won the UEFA Champions League before so that automatically means they have not won the continental treble ever before. The final of the UEFA Champions League becomes a race of treble.

Bayern has completed the domestic double winning the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal cup wins.

They have been crowned Champions of Germany for the 29th time in the club history.

They already have a continental treble once and may join Barcelona to become the second team to have completed the feat twice.

Paris Saint Germain has spent over 1 billion Euros to win the UEFA Champions League but has not been able to achieve this feat making Olympique Marseille, the only French team to win the competition in 1993. 

They have also completed the domestic double and need the Champions League to complete the continental treble.

If PSG wins the cup, they will become another French team to win the cup, the only French team to win it since 2010, complete a treble and join other European Elites in the hall of fame.
