Beirut Explosion: 70 Killed, More Than 4,000 Injured

There was an explosion in the capital city of Lebanon, Beirut, Tuesday, that claimed the lives of at least 70 people, injuring over 4,000.

Officials say the explosion was caused by explosive materials used in warehouses spanning six years.

Speaking on the explosion, President Michel Aoun said that the blast was "unacceptable" and that the warehouse where the explosion happened had stored 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate without proper care.

Authorities have launched further investigation into the explosion to find the main cause of the explosion while Lebanon's Supreme Defence Council has declared that offenders will face "maximum punishment".

Hospitals in the city are said to have been overwhelmed, with many buildings coming down with the explosion.

A three-day mourning has been declared by the president, adding that there would be a 100 billion lira emergency fund to cater to those affected by the explosion.

An eyewitness said to AFP, "All the buildings around here have collapsed. I'm walking through glass and debris everywhere, in the dark."

The explosion reached as far as 240 km, into the island of Cyprus.

World Leaders' Response

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in a tweet said, "The pictures and videos from Beirut tonight are shocking. All of my thoughts and prayers are with those caught up in this terrible incident.

"The UK is ready to provide support in any way we can, including to those British nationals affected."

The Prime Minister of Lebanon, Hassan Diab, has called on other countries for help to "heal our deep wounds."

US President Donald Trump described the explosion as "a terrible attack", while the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said, "We are monitoring and stand ready to assist the people of Lebanon as they recover from this horrible tragedy."
