Benue: Residents lament as flood destroys properties

Residents of High Level in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, are tallying the damages they have incurred as a result of intense flooding brought on by heavy rainfall.

Allnews.ng gathered that the area's severe flooding was exacerbated by the building of an underpass at High Level.

The corporation responsible for building the High-Level Underpass in Makurdi, Baahaus Global Investment, Nig. Ltd., was found to have been negligent in causing the flooding that has severely impacted the businesses and means of subsistence of the residents of the High-Level neighbourhood.

The construction company was accused by the flooding victims of obstructing all water routes and drainages, which resulted in water seeping into nearby houses and commercial buildings.

Numerous structures in the vicinity of the construction site were impacted, most notably Elder Thomas Anyaregh's building at No. 7 High-Level Rd. in Makurdi.

The structure, which included many commercial stores, was completely engulfed in water.

Tobias Ezenkwo, Vincent Nwakwo, Romanius Chukwuma Nkwo, Japheth Ochinawata, and Sylina Agwu (Lady J Computers) are among the tenants impacted.

Millions of naira's worth of goods were damaged by the rainfall, which was unable to pass through the blocked drainage systems.

Speaking to reporters, the property's landlord, Anyaregh, made it clear that while he is against the state government building the High-Level Underpass, he is vehemently against the incompetence of the construction company, which has repeatedly refused to build sufficient water channels despite repeated requests.

He bemoaned the fact that his and his renters' properties had been destroyed by their inactivity.

Elder Anyaregh, furious, swore he would pursue reparations for the harm the building company's negligence had caused.
