News of the nomination was announced by Disney Studios on Instagram in a congratulatory message to the production design team; Hannah Beachler, Carlos Laszlo, Susan Linss, Miranda Lorenz, Brandon Mendez, Rika Nakanishi, and Ethan Tobman.
Black is King was written, directed and executively produced by Beyonce. It serves as a visual companion to the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift.
