Bill To Increase Punishment Of Kidnappers To Life Imprisonme

 

The Nigerian Senate has increased the punishment of anyone found guilty of kidnapping to lifetime imprisonment, from the initial 10 years.

The lawmakers reached the resolve on Tuesday after the third reading and passage of “A bill for an Act to amend the Criminal Code Act CAP. C.38, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.”

Sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu of Lagos Central Senatorial District, the bill also seek to eliminate gender restrictions in the offence of rape and other related matters and removed statute of limitation on defilement

The Bill also eliminated the present time frame for reporting and prosecuting defilement cases in the country.

As well, the bill removed gender restrictions on the offence of rape by explaining that both male and female could be raped.

Defilement cases can be actionable as soon as the Bill becomes law.
