BIRS Soon To Cease Collection Of Old Naira Notes

In view of the redesign of some denominations of the naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Benue Internal Revenue Service(BIRS) has disclosed that agents will cease to collect the old notes from January 28, 2023.

This, it noted was to allow the lodgement of revenue received before the deadline by the CBN.

This was made known in a statement on Friday in Makurdi the state capital, by the Executive Chairman of BIRS, Mimi Adzape-Orubibi.

The statement reads "CBN has redesigned certain denominations of the Naira notes, namely: #200, #500 and #1000. According to the Central Bank, the old notes shall cease to be Legal Tender on Tuesday, 31st January 2023.

"The Central Bank's cashless policy has also placed a limit on the amount of cash members of the public are to withdraw in a day/week.

"In view of the changes, Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, staff/agents shall cease collection of revenue in the old Naira notes on 28th January, 2023, but accept collections in the new Naira notes only. 

"This is to enable lodgement of all Revenue collections of old Naira notes into the Bank before the deadline of 31st January 2023. The service shall also accept revenue payments through transfers and Bank deposits. 

"The tax-paying public should please take note, and adhere strictly," the statement reads.
