The National Population Commission (NPC) has stated that any birth certificate issued by a local government or at hospitals are not considered credible.

The commission declared that only birth certificates it issued are considered acceptable as it has been set up for such purposes.

This development was disclosed by the Ebonyi State Director, NPC, Edward Ogbu during the training of workers at the state's health facility.

The meeting saw in attendance health workers from various local government areas in the state as proxies of each health centre.

During the training - a joint effort of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and the Ebonyi State Government - Ogbu appealed to the health workers in the registration of their children.

According to statistics from a 2018 report of the National Demographic Health Survey, 57 percent of Nigerian children do not have registered birth certificates.

Ogbu said, “Twenty-six per cent are registered with private clinic/hospitals, nine per cent are registered with Local Government Administration while three per cent are registered with other authorities."
