Bishop Says Goverment Needs Church's Partnership For Nationa

Muhammadu Buhari

Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Adekunle, Bishop of the Egba Anglican Communion on Wednesday in Abeokuta emphasized the importance of the government collaborating with the church in order to promote national development.

During a news conference held to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Christian missionaries in Abeokuta, Adekunle stressed that the government should not bear the sole responsibility for the development and urged it to support Christian religious organisations in achieving success and contributing to the overall development of society.

The bishop also pointed out that the growth of Christianity in Nigeria has had a significant impact on various aspects of social life, including culture, education, politics, and the development of national languages.

“Both government and Christianity should partner for national development.

"The church should not fold its arms and depend solely on government will not help our development.

“Christianity and government are concerned with the total development of man and society.

“It is expedient that both of them should partner to achieve success,” he said.

Bishop Adekunle highlighted the impact that the introduction of Christianity in Àbeokuta in 1843 had on Nigeria, including bringing civilization and development to the country.

He emphasized that religion has had significant effects on various aspects of life in Nigeria, including culture, education, politics, agriculture, and health.

“The history of Christianity in Nigeria dates back to the 15th Century when the Portuguese brought Christianity but were unable to plant the religion due to their involvement in the slave trade.

“However, freed slaves captured from Abeokuta after reuniting with their loved ones by 1838 sent letters to the Queen in England, requesting for missionaries to be sent to Nigeria as there was a need for new converts who received the gospel to be baptised.

“It was this that brought Rev. Henry Townsend and his team from Freetown to Badagry and Abeokuta. They were widely received by the Commander of Egba Army and his people on January 4,1843; that is 180 years ago,” he said.

The clergyman also encouraged the church to adhere to high moral standards and practice what they preach, stating that "Christianity preaches morality".
