Blasphemy: No Muslim Lawyer Should Represent Convicted Kano Singer - Muslim Cleric

Blasphemy: No Muslim Lawyer Should Represent Convicted Kano

The Chairman of Sokoto State Ulama Forum of Izala, Abubakar Usman Mabera, has said that any lawyer that stands in the defence of the Kano singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu - who was sentenced to death by the Sharia court for blasphemy - has renounced their Islamic faith.

The death sentence of Sharif-Aminu sparked outrage among Nigerians who decried the sentencing of the singer, as it was in direct contrast with the laws enshrined in the constitution.

However, the Sharia court has demanded that the death sentence of the singer be carried out.

In response to the pronouncement of the Sharia court, the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, said that he would not waste any time in signing the death warrant of the singer unless his case was appealed within 30 days.

Mabera emphasised the importance of the execution of the pronouncement, as the crime of blasphemy was a capital offence in Islam.

He said that “any lawyer who comes out to defend him has renounced his Islamic faith”.

Mabera added that God was not happy with Muslims and that they should seek his forgiveness.

”For all indications, God is not happy with us and we have to repent because he alone is the answer to our woes."

Sharif-Aminu is reportedly left unrepresented, according to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
