A 24-year-old Makerere University fresh graduate was found hanging dead in the middle of a church in Western Uganda on Thursday, police confirmed in a statement on Friday, March 31, 2023.

According to the officials, Flavia Nagasha's corpse was discovered by a passerby inside Kagarama Daystar Church at around 4 p.m. on Thursday. Flavia Nagasha is thought to have committed suicide by hanging.

The February 2023 graduate reportedly killed herself using a rope that church leaders had once bound her with while conducting an exorcism on her, a local leader in the area revealed to Monitor, a Ugandan news outlet, on Friday.

“The deceased is a resident of my cell but died in Ngarama Cell, Nyabikungu Parish.

"She had been coming to the church for prayers for about two months,” said Alex Kwoshaba leader in the neighbouring Butahe Village in Rugando Sub County.

The event was verified by the Rwampara Police, who stated that Nagasha "climbed drums to suspend her body on the roof in the middle of the church where her deceased mother usually led her for prayers."

According to the Rwampara OC CID Clare Arinaitwe, a man seeking refuge from rainfall at the church discovered Nagasha's corpse around 4 pm.

Nagasha recently received her undergraduate degree certificate during the 73rd graduation ceremony at Makerere University.

Nagasha's friend, who wished to remain anonymous so she could talk openly, however, stated that the deceased "even missed her graduation day due to mental disorders- and often sought exorcism."

She also said, that last week, a relative of Nagasha's household passed away.

The acquaintance said to Monitor, "Even the father passed away last year under mysterious conditions.

According to recent evidence from Kwoshaba, Nagasha's grandma is thought to have killed herself ten years ago.

The neighbourhood representative stated that there have been mental health problems in her mother's family.

Nagasha's sister Phionah Nimusiima claimed that their efforts to save her (Nagasha's) life at various born-again churches had been futile.

"Nagasha fell ill following exams at Makerere University. She received therapy after doctors informed us she had a mental health issue.

"Before passing away yesterday, she was healthy two days ago", according to her relatives.

"We gave the corpse to the family for burial after conducting a postmortem and determining that Nagasha committed suicide", police who collected the body from the church at around 7 p.m. on Thursday said to reporters on Friday.
