Boris Johnson Wins UK Election By Wide Margin

Leader of the Conservative Party and UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has won what is described as the UK's "most dramatic electoral victories in decades."

Johnson won on a single campaign strategy, and that is to consummate the Brexit deal.

The Conservatives, by Friday morning, had secured a total of 358 of the 360 seats in the House of Parliament, ahead of the 203 positions by the Labour Party.

The Liberal Democrats, led by Jo Swinson, managed to get 11 seats, while the Scottish National Party scored 48 seats, most of them from Scotland.

Post-election, Johnson said, "I want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a December election, which we didn't want to call but which I think has turned out to be a historic election," stating that the huge win makes it easier and also serving as a motivation for the Conservative Party to get work done on Brexit.

Brexit Deal

Johnson has been able to get the Brexit deal done with Brussels, but it couldn't get through the parliament after members of the Conservative party that wanted to remain rebelled against the deal. But with Johnson ridding the party of those rebels, his move to get the Brexit deal through the parliament seems less of a problem now.

With Johnson coming out victorious in the just-concluded election, Brexit looks like it would have a softer landing, making the UK have somewhat of a relationship with Europe. This will be feasible because Johnson would no longer need to brown-nose the Brexiteers that have made the deal a bit complicated, making its passage through the parliament.

Labour's Loss

The Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn, blamed the Brexit campaign on the party's loss, a disastrous one since 1985. Corbyn said that the Brexit campaign eclipsed the election. The Labour Party ran on the message of increased public spending and total economic reforms, not saying much on the Brexit deal. Corbyn also promised to revisit the withdrawal agreement, leaving the voters to decide on the new deal.

A former Labour Party candidate, Phil Wilson, who lost to Tony Blair, vented on Twitter, saying, "The Party's leadership went down like a lead balloon on the doorstep, Labour's leadership needs to take responsibility."

Regarding his plans on running for office as a Labour Party member, Corbyn said, "I will discuss with our party to ensure that there is a process of reflection now -- on this result and the policies of the party going forward, and I will lead the party during that period to ensure that that discussion takes place and we move on into the future."
