Borno: Violence Against Women Surges As Government Convicts

The Borno State government has revealed that it has recorded over 700 cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) across the state.

Out of the over 700 cases, the government also secured the conviction of 100, all in the period of one year.

The was disclosed by the State's Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo in Maiduguri.

She made this known to Daily Trust at a three-day training on gender equity and sensitive reporting for women journalists in the state.

According to the Commissioner, “Yes, in the last one year we have had more than 700 cases because people are now aware of their rights, so people report much more than before.

"If you remember some years ago, victims are always on the defensive, people would say it is a thing of shame but now victims are coming out to report to law enforcement agencies."

Gambo further lamented the continuous cases of violence against women and children despite passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) and Child Protection Laws in the state.
