Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in Borno State have commended the state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum for settling workers' N705 million leave grants owed by the government.
In a statement co-signed by the two bodies, the NLC Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa and the TUC Chairman, Comrade Babayo .M. Hamma confirmed that workers have received the grants.
The statement was made available in Maiduguri shortly after a Joint State Administrative Council Meeting by the two groups.
Governor Zulum approved the disbursement of the grant on August 2, 2022, to clear outstanding leave grants for the year 2020.
The governor had also approved the 2021 grant while the 2020 grant was delayed. He said the 2022 leave grants would be paid in due time.
According the statement by the labour groups, the groups appealed to “all workers in the state to be responsive in the discharge of their given responsibility as the leadership will not relent in its effort to make sure that their welfare is at the top most priority”.
Reacting to the new payment system put in place by the governor, they said the system has proved “better service delivery”.
The statement further urged the Borno state government to “hasten the implementation of outstanding promotions, so that workers will have a sense of belonging”.
The governor had on June 26, 2022, directed the Borno state Head of Service to "identify promotional vacancies and organize promotional examinations for eligible workers" while putting forward payment of their benefits.
